Well I leave for Ethiopia in one day! I am extremely excited and have been getting butterflies the last week or so. The preparation up to this point has been incredible and gone surprisingly smooth! This whole process started in September almost on a whim. I was interning in Arlington and God just put it on my heart to do this after graduation, so I e-mailed a contact I had received through a friend on a Sunday night. He e-mailed me back within thirty minutes and we pretty much had the trip planned that night! Then I began sending out support letters and through His grace I was able to raise 100% of the funds needed to support my trip, which was an affirmation to myself that I am supposed to go.
We had a couple speed bumps on the way but they were resolved quickly. The pharmacy only gave me enough Malaria pills for 34 days and I need them for 50 (I discovered this 2 days ago), so Sunday morning was spent with a couple semi-frantic calls to CVS. Thankfully the CVS in Georgetown had them in stock so we picked up the remaining pills. So now I won't get Malaria, which I think is a good thing. Also I have a 20-hour layover in Ghana as I arrive in Africa, so I had no idea what to do during this time. Getting cabs and going to hotels can be risky, as Americans are not trusted in Ghana and con-men prey on them. I guess it's easy for them to tell I am not African... But yet again God provided! A good friend did a mission trip in Ghana a few years back and messaged her contacts there and they have a guest house five minutes from the airport! So that will be awesome, I can grab a shower and a nap!
Please be praying for my safe travel over the next coming few days and for anyone I may come into contact with while traveling. I can't wait, this should be an awesome adventure. Here is my flight schedule if you are interested to know where I am:
June 1: 6:30 PM Departure from Austin, TX - Atlanta, GA
June 1: 11:15 PM Departure from Atlanta, GA - Accra, Ghana
June 3: 10:15 AM Departure from Accra, Ghana - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
So hopefully those go smooth! Thanks for all your prayers and support!

My sweet BABY brother! I'm so excited for you! But also have butterflies thinking about all the scary things ahead of you! I've been to some countries that initially really scared and intimidated me - I always respected the culture and made sure not to stand out any more than a blonde with blue eyes can! I learned more in days than any classroom could have taught me in months or years. I know you will do fantastic and will learn so much! This is a chance of a lifetime and one you will take with you for years to come. I applaud your strength, your faith, and your willingness to give! My heart smiles when I think of you and our prayers and thoughts are with you on this wonderful journey! I love you "little" brother! And, I'm SOOO proud to be your sister!
ReplyDelete~ Thinking of you now and always,
